Buying Guns

Buyers must be at least 21 years old to purchase any firearm in Florida from a licensed vendor.  There is a waiting period of 3 business days not including federal holidays and weekends, unless the purchaser has a concealed carry permit.  Exceptions to purchase long guns are for active duty military, law enforcement, and individuals that have a Florida Hunter Safety Card and a valid Florida hunting license.

You must comply with Federal, State and Local Laws at the time of order and transfer of ownership.

In Florida, you may purchase a gun from a dealer, an individual, a family member or online. Different rules apply to each situation. The info provided is meant to be a guide. Check with your State for official rules about buying and selling guns and ammunition.

Federal Law & Transfers

Federal Law mandates that guns purchased online may only be shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealer like Oak Ridge Gun Range. The dealer will ensure that you are legally allowed to purchase the gun under all Federal, State and Local Laws before completing the gun transfer and the FFL will also arrange for the appropriate background checks to be completed prior to releasing the firearm.

Oak Ridge Gun Range is a Florida FFL Dealer.  If you purchased a firearm from an online source, or from a private party out of state, or your state doesn’t allow private sales, you will need to do an FFL transfer between the seller and the buyer. This means arranging for an FFL dealer like Oak Ridge Gun Range to handle the transfer of ownership for you.

It is a simple process that includes transferring the gun to the FFL Dealer so they can complete a background check on the buyer, and then the FFL dealers transfers the gun to the new buyer after the appropriate waiting period. It is just like you were buying the firearm from Oak Ridge.

Types of Gun Sales

Online/Auction Gun Sales:
Many guns are now sold online. It is illegal to send those guns directly to consumers in most cases. (There are exceptions for in state person to person sales where legal, and certain antique or black powder guns in most states.)

That means if you buy a gun online through a distributor or a dealer or even from another person you need to arrange an FFL transfer. If you are buying a brand-new gun, some distributors will ship directly to Oak Ridge Gun Range in Gulf Breeze, FL.

If you are doing an FFL transfer for an online order, be sure to complete the FFL Transfer Request Form to start the process.

Family to Family Gun Sales
You are allowed to gift a gun to a family member as long as they are legally allowed to own a firearm. It is strongly recommended to complete a bill of sale and list the name and social security number of the person receiving the gun, in addition to the gun model and serial number. Both parties should sign and date the sale and keep a copy in your permanent records to verify the transfer in the case it is lost or stolen.  An FFL transfer is strongly recommended to protect the seller if the gun was to be stolen or used in an unlawful way in the future. Check with local laws before completing any transfer.

Across State Line Sales
Most states require any firearm that is transferred across state lines to be processed by a FFL dealer in the buyers state.  Contact Oak Ridge for more details.
